10. In addition to the importance of mathematics in the normal science courses and in Social Science (statistics), it was agreed that to develop the aptitude for theratical studies no among Chinese students good Honours courses in Pure and Applied Mathematics should be developed. The Chairman emphasized the importance of keeping in mind that, if good was to be achieved, sound Honours schools in all subjects must be developed.
11. It was commonly agreed that there should be development in the teaching of philosophy and that provision should be made for the study of Indian and Chinese thought against a background study of basic Western philosophy. The Chairman thought that provision in a Department of Philosophy should be made for the study of the History of science. Mr. Adams suggested that as classical studios in the West comprehended the study both of history and philosophy so studies of Chinese and English by Chinese students should be developed with the same comprehensiveness.
12. The Committee thought it was important that provision should be mous for a Department in which adequate provision could be made for the study of geography on modern methods.
B. Faculty of Science.
13. It was agreed that the essential departments were gal irents of Chemistry, Physics, Botany and Zoology.
(a) No special emphasis appeared to be call d for on any distinctive branch of chemistry.
(b) The suggested development of the study of nuclear physics in China would bust be achieved by the training of good Honours graduates of the Univ rsity of Hong Kong at a British univeristy.
(c) By reason of the geographical position of Hong Kong and the existence of a scheme for a Fisheries Research Institute i vae of importance that specini emphasis should fall on Marine Biology.
14. It was suggested that no wide development was celled for in the teaching of Botany and Geology in Hong Kong because I tac restrictions imposed by the restriced species anï typs of the aru... 15. Certain numbers of the Committee were of opinion that the studier in physiology, anatomy and biochemistry should be organised within the Faculty of science even though the Department of Pathology should tend to become annexed to the Faculty of Medicine and the teaching hospital.
C. Faculty of Medicinc.
16. After discussion, it was generally agreed
(a) tht in qüdition to provision for the teaching of m`diciar and surgery lrunay mnie, it was desirable that the Deparurent of Public Health and Preventive Medicine should be eveloped, that ibu facilities offered by the municipal organisation of Hong Kong stol be exploited to the full for teaching purposes, thal' an Institumo of Public Health should be developed with the aim of affording comprehensive courses in Preventive Medicine for graduate stricats,
(b) that the further development of the study of Paedi
desirable.
